Travel: The Key to the Unknown

battle of lookout mtnThere’s nothing more gratifying than visiting a new place and seeing new things. One of my all time favorite things to do is travel. Being able to be a part of someone else’s culture for a few days is amazing. Traveling is one of those rare occasions where you can just forget about what’s going on; you can leave your worries at home.

One of my favorite places that I’ve been to is Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chattanooga is located in southeastern Tennessee. It shares a border with Georgia. This city is littered with history. If you throw a stone, no matter what part of the city you’re in, it will surly land on a Civil War battlefield. The site of “The Battle Above the Clouds” sits atop Lookout Mountain. This is the site of one of the most inspiring, if you will, statues to come out of the Civil War. The statue depicts a Confederate and a Union soldier shaking hands. If you go to the tiny visitor’s center right outside of Point Park, there is this amazing painting. I believe this panting was painted during the war. It takes up an entire wall of this building. Note: If you go see this painting, do not lean on the divider…an alarm may or may not go off. Anyway, this painting (above image) is called Battle Above the Clouds. The artist made sure to accurately paint every single detail in this painting. There are two ways to get to the top of this mountain to see this piece of history. You can either drive, or you can take the Incline Railway. It is the steepest railroad at 72.7% grade. Up there the air is thin, and the view is breathtaking. Personally, I love nature. I’d rather go take in a view than go to a museum. Another place I visited was Rock City (and yes, I did play Rock City by Damn Yankees as we pulled up).  There was this amazing waterfall. It was on a section of the mountain called lover’s leap (my picture below). We were so high up on the mountain, we could see shadows from clouds on everything below us. From the top, you could see the borders of seven different states.

Some other amazing locations we went to were:

  • Ruby Falls
  • Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel
  • Tennessee Aquarium
  • Moon Pie shop

If someone were to ask me where they should go on vacation, I would, without a doubt, say Chattanooga, Tennessee.
